Adoption a pet at an out of state shelter?
Does anyone know how you go about getting transport for a pet that is at an out of state shelter? For example, if I was interested in a dog that’s in Texas and wanted to bring him to New Jersey, are there organizations that do this? Is it volunteer or does it cost big bucks? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Some shelters will send them on planes (at your expense). Call and ask!
I saw show on pet channel about this. There are networks of volunteers to transport part way, then another takes over so on. BUT now fuel has gotten soout hand may be a cost. Maybe contact rescue sites on this subject. Some only work with certain breeds. But may have info on others. Sorry I dont know more. *mamatx
I put “transport rescue animals” into the search engine and got lots of addresses, but I have never had personal experience with any. I did volunteer to help in a transport once, but then it had to be changed and I couldn’t participate. I think that there are volunteer groups that do this sort of thing.
I would start with what the shelter recommends. They may have suggestions other than flying. There was a big story in the news about an airline that ran over a dog that was being transported to new owners. I would be a little cautious as to having an animal flown without being accompanied by a person. You just never know what kind of treatment they will receive. Your alternative – awesome road trip (I lived in TX and drove home to move back to MA/RI area). Good luck with your adoption, I think its great that you are going to consider a shelter animal – they do make GREAT pets.
My experience has been that many adoption centers go a little overboard in qualifying adopters. Being diligent is one thing, but acting like it’s a child being adopted is a bit much! Sorry… that wasn’t your question, was it?
I talked with several out of state locations and they all said it was up to me to arrange transportation, so maybe that’s the usual. If there is no such pet delivery business… maybe you’ve hit on an opportunity.
the shelter may want you to be a local resident its totally up to them to adopt . but carrying it to a different state you could go pick him up or check your local air port and contact the shelter and make plans for delta dash the shelter would have to take the dog to the airport then you would have to pick it up from your local air port . a big expense may be cheaper to drive, find a dog in your area,or if it’s a small dog you can put in a carry on bag get a round trip ticket they make a little canvas type carrier that has a nylon mesh screen that has a zipper around it for this purpose I’m not sure who makes them though . but if your dog will be small enough to fit in one and you need to check on the size of the carry on may be to big and they want let you carry it on the plain as a carry on best thing to do if you dont want to drive or find a different dog is contact your shelter and see if there willing to ship and then check the air ports for arrangements. good luck to you and your new pet.
